A ring, a ring of fravendar

A pocket full of stupe

Toadpepper, carkitt

Suddenly we’re mute

A ring, a ring of fravendar

To mask the funny smell

Turquoise, turquoise

Time to ring the bell

A ring, a ring of fravendar

Amethystine too

Throw it on the bonfire

Next we’ll throw on you!

A ring, a ring of fravendar

Healers know it all

Turquoise, Turquoise

Down you fall.

Ancient herbal properties rhyme. Origins unknown.

Brave had always imagined having a big sister would be great. But now, after putting up with True, he was over it. The boat felt smaller every day, and her stinking mood hung around like a fart in a spacesuit. He’d done his best to ignore her, but in the course of daily life on board, they had to speak. Day five of their journey and he still felt uneasy, like he’d failed some test. When he spoke, True snapped at him. When he answered her questions, she rolled her eyes as if to say, “You’re clueless.”

He hadn’t meant to get mad, but it had all come spewing out. Her wiseass remarks and pure evil comments really did remind him of Riley. Maybe that’s what had triggered him? There was some kind of uber-superiority complex story circling her head, and while he had zero interest in finding out what it was, he was bearing the results. Every second! Brave clenched his jaw and itched his ten billionth insect bite, suppressing a groan. If one more of the little turds bit him, he’d go full boss mode!

A day later, nothing had changed. He’d thought she might take him seriously after his outburst, but honesty got him nowhere. She spoke even less, and sometimes he’d catch her observing him, as if she studied a slimy bug under a magnifying glass.

“Maybe I should forget about it!” he muttered to himself. For the first time since they’d arrived in this nutso world, he had time to relax. He was on an epic river adventure in the wilderness, and he should enjoy the ride. At least for this short time, he could try and forget about loved ones in the hands of evil rulers and lame girls with issues and just concentrate on the moment.

He watched the rainforest skim by. The river’s docile current had taken on a new personality—angry rapids hurled them down a narrower stretch, arid rocks and high banks on one side, a madness of overhanging trees and greenery on the other. A flash of color revealed the long, slithering form of a bright tree snake shimmying along a branch. Massive bugs the size of his head dived out of the trees, ducking and dodging around the boat and skimming the surface of the river for lesser insect snacks. The river’s constant susurration mixed with the erratic forest noises like an orchestra who’d never bothered to practice.

True didn’t seem to notice. For no apparent reason, she stabbed the pole at the bubbling flow and scowled. Brave could see beads of sweat trickling down her forehead. Every now and again, she
